Kinds of ukuleles

Ukeleles come in different sizes. From smallest to largest, the basic ukulele sizes are: soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. Generally they have four strings, though 5-, 6-, and 8-string varieties also exist.

Ukuleles are available in different materials, each with their own pros and cons. We recommend people start with a laminate soprano or concert ukulele in the $50–$150 range.

Soprano, concert, and tenor ukuleles are tuned to GCEA (the G string is usually tuned to high-G; alternatively, it can be tuned to low-G). Baritones are tuned to DGBE, the same as the bottom four strings of a standard guitar.

Hybrid instruments also exist, such as the banjolele, guitarlele, and bass ukulele.
