FAQs

Have a question that’s not answered here?

What happened to TUM?

Before the COVID pandemic, this group was known as Tucson Ukulele Meetup / TUM. Since 2023, we go by Tucson Ukulele Uprising (also known as TUKU). We still meet regularly to play music together.

What if I don’t really know how to play ukulele?

That’s ok! That’s pretty much where we all started. Even if you only know one chord, we’re happy to have you join us. Heck, even if you don’t know any chords! We don’t hold auditions. Our members are very friendly and always happy to help less experienced players. You’ll be playing in no time!

What if I don’t own an ukulele?

You are still welcome to check us out, though eventually you will want an ukulele. Ukuleles can be procured at several local establishments. Visit our Tips & Resources Page for more info.

What kind of music do you play?

Unlike many ukulele groups, we have a very eclectic song list. Pop, bluegrass, county, gospel, rock, soul — you name it, we play it all.

Can I suggest a song?

Yes! Feel free to get in touch with one of our organizers. When a member brings a new song to the group, the member will be expected to introduce it and work with the organizers on how it should be played.

What are the benefits of being a dues-paying member?

Support this amazing local organization! Plus, when you pay your $25 yearly dues, you get a highly collectible TUKU button for the current year.

Does TUKU play out in the community?

Yes, indeed!  We regularly play at the Tucson Cyclovia events during the year. We also play for any group that is willing to sit still long enough to listen, such as senior living facilities and fund raisers.

Can I bring another instrument?

We are, of course, a ukulele group. If you want to play another instrument with us (such as mandolin, fiddle, accordion, keyboards, banjo, percussion, bass), you should speak to one of the organizers IN ADVANCE. We want to preserve our ukulele sound and the organizers will have the final say on this.  The exception is banjolele, for which you would not need advance clearance.
